The tropical island of Bali, Indonesia has an unbelievable variety of activities and attractions to offer a short-term visitor. Whether you are in need of some serious rest and relaxation or are looking for an encounter with an interesting and vibrant culture that is still very much alive in the 21st century, Bali will reward your search.
The beaches and surfing of Bali are legendary, and surfing has been bringing travelers to these shores for decades now. If surfing is not your thing, perhaps the outstanding nightlife and world-class shopping opportunities will be enough to keep you busy! Whether you’re a backpacker on a very strict budget or looking to put on your Armani suit and drink champagne, you’ll be well-catered-to on this island.
One often overlooked Bali activity is the variety of wonderful day trips that you can do using your hotel in Kuta or Sanur as a base. You’ll be offered informal tours from taxi drivers on every corner, and it’s a perfectly safe and a reasonably inexpensive way to get out and see some of the incredible scenery of the island.
Head up into the mountains in the central volcanic area of Bali, the Bedugul area for instance, where you can spend the afternoon at the fruit market or exploring the botanical gardens. Bedugul is located at about 1400 m, and you’ll enjoy the respite from the heat at the lower elevations. From Bedugul, you can head over to Kintamani, to have a cool beverage right on the rim of a still-active volcano, Mount Batur, and gaze down upon the enormous Lake Batur in the crater.
Continuing down from the mountains up to the north coast of Bali, you’ll find the sleepy little beach towns around Singaraja and Lovina Beach. Find yourself a restaurant right on the water’s edge and enjoy a dinner of fresh fish caught earlier in the day from the placid Bali Sea. Be forewarned though: more than one day tripper has chosen to stay for a few days in Lovina after experiencing just how laid-back it feels here.
Whatever you do in Bali you can be pretty sure you’ll find the vacation for which you came. Far more than a surfer’s destination nowadays, the island has something for everyone.
