Located 50 km from Malaga, Nerja is situation on a low cliff that in turn is backed by mountain ranges. Nerja hotels enable you to explore the sandy inlets as well as long beaches. To the east of the town Nerjas caves attract hundreds of day-trippers and are a great place for the summer festivals of dance an music.

Getting To Nerja
Located of the E15 Malaga bypass to Almeria, the nearest airport and train station are in Malaga. Nerjas is easily reached from Malaga by buses as it is from Almeria. Nerja itself is small enough to walk around on foot.

A Brief History
Starting as a Moorish settlement, an earthquake in 1884 destroyed most of the town and none of the Moorish buildings survived. Nerjas main industry is sugar refining, as well as with much of Andalucia – tourism. Due to architectural controls there are few high-rise hotels and the centre remains typical with narrow winding streets.

Things to Do In Nerja
The centre of the tow is the famous Balcon de Europa that is a tree-lined promenade with views over the rocky coast. This is more of a tourist trap so expect to pay more in these bars and restaurants if you chose to frequent them. To the west of here is the Church of El Salvdor. A few fishing boats can be found on the Playa Calahonda just to the east of Balcon, with the most popular beach being Burriana which does get very busy in the summer.

Nerja Accommodation
There is a wide choice of accommodation and hotels in Nerja to suit all price ranges, it is however advised to book early for summer bookings as it is a popular destination. Hotel Jerja and accommodation of note include Hotel Balcon De Europa Nerja, Hotel Carabeo Nerja, Parador de Nejra, Hotel Bajarmar, Portofino, Hostal Alhambra and Mena. There is also camping available in Nerja, or at least around 5km east of the town on the N340.

Notable Excursions from Nerja
Cuevas de Nerja
These caves discovered as recently as 1959 by local schoolboys no less are now a national monument. There are regular buses from Nerja to the caves the resturant there has a terrace with superb views along the coast. However this tends to get busy so it is worth making the walk a couple of hundred metres to the Hotel Al Andalus with similarly superb views and it’s own terrace restaurant.

Maro
The tiny viallage of Maro is on the clifftop just 4km east of Nerja, and clost to the caves. There are regular buses from Nerja to Maro.
