During the summer most people in Europe, or visiting Europe, like to head south to the Mediterranean sea for a beach holiday in Spain or Italy. Now I’m not knocking those holidays, because they are great and I’ve done them often enough. But a great option for someone looking to do a little something different is to visit Berlin during the summer. It is a time of the year when the city really comes to life The parks all turn a luxuriant green and the moment the sun comes out they just fill up with people catching a few rays and enjoying the beautiful weather.
One of the great things about spending the summer in Berlin is that it can be so cheap. We have friends who come over from Dublin every year for the whole summer holiday She is a school teacher so doesn’t’ have to work and he runs his own business so just comes over in a van with all his equipment and sets up shop in Berlin. One of the reasons they can do this is because it is so easy to find cheap accommodation in Berlin. They rent a fully furnished apartment for very little money. Other friends of ours come over often and stay in cheap flats or sublets. It is not just the accommodation that is cheap. Eating out and drinking are also really much less costly than in many other cities in Europe.
A second reason is because there is just so much to do here in summer. The city is surrounded by beautiful lakes that are within easy reach of public transport. There are few better ways to spend a hot day in summer than just lazing about around a lake and swimming in the cool, clear waters. There are plenty of other free attractions too. You can go browsing around flea markets, walk along the line of the old Berlin wall or visit historic sites such as the Reichstag If you are a history buff, you will have more than enough to keep you occupied. And if you just want a relaxed and enjoyable summer, you can do a lot worse than visit Berlin.
