Tenerife: A Guide for Travelers

in Uncategorized

Located in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the coast of Africa, the Spanish Island of Tenerife is the largest of all of the Canary Islands. This incredible Spanish island is home to more than 900,000 people, making it the most populated area on both the islands and Spain itself. The island of Tenerife receives more than 5 million visitors each year. If you plan to be one of them, there are a few things you should know.

The Weather in Tenerife

The temperatures in Tenerife tend to be moderate throughout the entire year, which is part of the reason why the island is such a popular tourist destination. While the weather will likely be gorgeous no matter where you end up, keep in mind that the northern part of the island tends to be cooler (and sometimes rainier), while the southern part of the island is dryer.

Transportation on the Island of Tenerife

Most visitors to Tenerife choose to either rent a car or use the public bus system during their stay on the island. Those nervous about driving in a strange place should stick to the bus system. You can purchase a “bono bus ticket” which will give you a discount of anywhere from 30% to 50%, depending on the distance you are traveling. Couples traveling together can share one ticket, and if you transfer buses within a 2 hour time period, you may be able to make the change free of charge.

If you want to travel between towns, you may want to consider renting a car in order to get from destination to destination within a reasonable amount of time. The highway system circles the entire island and can get you to each of the main towns. Just remember that other roads are not as well cared for.

Useful Spanish Phrases

It is important to communicate with your hosts when visiting any foreign destination. The main language of Spain is, of course, Spanish. If you’re in a major city, you’ll find plenty of people speaking English. If you’re in a smaller town, you’ll need to know a few words of Spanish unless, of course, you have a guide. Here are a few words to get you started:

  • Buenos dias (Good morning)
  • Por favor (Please)
  • Gracias (Thank you)
  • No comprendo (I don’t understand)

The island of Tenerife is one of the most visited for good reason. Start your trip by grabbing seats on one of the cheap flights to Tenerife and finding a great resort hotel. This is one island vacation you’ll always remember.
