Looking through reviews of various Captiva Island hotels online, I found myself absolutely amazed at how many stellar reviews some of these places were getting. Almost in disbelief, I wondered if my vacation to Captiva Island would leave me with the same sort of awe stricken words as these reviewers.
I am happy to report that the reviewers were both right and wrong. While the Captiva Island hotels were great – it was the rest of the experience outside of the hotel that made my vacation so amazing.
To start off, Captiva Island is a bit of a magical place. It is an island off the northern end of Sanibel Island, near to Fort Myers, Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. Entering Captiva Island is a bit like traveling back in time to a simpler era.
Captiva Island is small enough that it is easily walkable or bike-able. The people are so friendly, and it is perhaps one of the most relaxing places that I have ever vacationed. The beaches on the Gulf side of the island are wide white sand beaches that are a joy to play in. When you’re boogie boarding on these beaches, you’re not getting cut on rocks or getting sand burn – the sand is just too soft for that.
Going fishing in the back bay is an experience as well. Past the mangroves that line the waters edge on the bay-side of the island, the water in the bay is great for fishing as well as just watching. You may spot a manatee or dolphin enjoying these quiet waters where the freshwater river meets the salty Gulf of Mexico. Even just hanging out on a hammock on the island is so relaxing and peaceful. Food on the island, and at the restaurants on nearby Sanibel Island is excellent.
Are the hotels great? Mine was pretty great – though I’m inclined to think that when the Captiva Island atmosphere starts to relax you – it is pretty easy to be pleased by a hotel experience since you’re already relaxed and easy going.
So remember when you’re booking a vacation – it’s more than just the hotel. What takes place the rest of the time is going to leave an even longer impression.
